Salvador, Brazil is one of the oldest cities in Brazil. The distinctive feature of this city is that it has two levels. 

The lower (cidade baixa) is home to the port, commercial area and some residential areas.  The upper level (cidade alta) houses the principal shopping area, government buildings and historical center, plus residential areas.  The two levels are connected by the “Lacerda”, a landmark elevator, carrying passengers 234 feet between the lower and upper levels.

Salvador was a major center for the African Slave trade in Brazil during the early 1800’s, which many current residents carry forward in folklore, dressing in period costumes for the tourist trade, and distinctive ethnic cuisine.  This all adds to the unique personality of the city.

I was so impressed by the architecture of the city, especially the Colonial Baroque Style Churches.  It is my opinion that Salvador, Brazil is one of the most interesting cities in South America.
