One cannot help but notice the contrast between urban development within the City itself and the age-old East African culture still practiced in the out-skirting rural communities. The Makumbusho Village Museum is a unique museum where one can learn about the cultures of the many ethnic groups of Tanzania. This open-air museum displays a number of furnished houses from across Tanzania, offering visitors a depiction of life throughout this fascinating country. Devil’s Island Today

During a recent cruise, I had an opportunity to take a day trip to Devil’s Island. The island is a famous French penal colony in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of French Guiana. The beauty of Devil’s Island is offset by its dark history. During the 19th and 20th Century the prison housed thousands of prisoners, mainly French political exiles.
